Materials and Chromebook Pickup: Monday, August 17, 2020

Drive Up and Pick Up:
On Monday, August 17th, learning materials, Chromebooks, and pre-ordered spirit wear will be distributed to students in a drive up and pick up process---- by grade level time block.

We will have 3 stations along Colorado and Alta Vista. We implore you to remain in your vehicle and wear a mask (even in the car) when picking up the items. To prevent collisions, please approach the distribution line on Colorado Blvd. heading east during your child's assigned time block. We will have runners who will bring your student learning materials, Chromebooks (and Loaner Agreements), and spirit wear to your car. If you will need a Chromebook, we will require that parents complete a Loaner Agreement. For this reason, we ask that you bring your own pen to complete the form inside of your vehicle.

Learning materials will be distributed on Colorado Blvd., Chromebooks will be issued/exchanged on Alta Vista, and the spirit wear table will be near the main entrance at the front of the school. Order your Monroe Spirit Wear online at https://monroepta.membershiptoolkit.com

A Message from the Principal Regarding the 2020-21 School Year

Dear Mighty Monroe Community,

Lately, many parents have expressed their valid concern with the unconventional opening of the new school year, and I want to assure you that I hear you and understand you. I, too, am a mother of an elementary school child, and I am equally as concerned with my own child's educational experiences, potential learning gaps, and social-emotional development.

As you might recall, last year, we were thrown into "crisis teaching," and learning conditions were far from optimal. Educators have learned from those experiences, and will take those tough lessons, feedbacks you've provided in surveys and emails, and our rich conversation at our focus group in May, and we will honor and include your voice in our plans.

As we continue our preparations for the 2020-21 school year, a planning group of parents, teachers, and administrators will gather to discuss the best distance learning instructional program for dual language immersion students in Monrovia Unified. Our planning will be centered around distance learning in consideration of the following: 1) effective instructional strategies with an emphasis on feedback, 2) student participation and engagement, 3) building relationships and community in a virtual environment, 4) student academic achievement, 5) additional support for students with learning gaps, and 6) equity and access for all.

I can assure you that our plan will be thoughtful, well-articulated, rigorous, and robust, and our Mighty Monroe Lions will be met where they are --- academically and socially. As details and specifics are formulated, I will communicate them to our community in a timely manner. Again, this is a time to come together in mutual support, and I am with you 100% of the way. We got this!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jarvis
Principal, Monroe Elementary School
Director of Bilingual Programs, MUSD
...Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader...

"Only those who can see the invisible, can do the impossible."

Sinceramente,

Dra. Jarvis

The Circle of Pride (On Campus Parade): 9 am to 11:30 am on Wednesday, June 3, 2020.

We envision The Circle of Pride as a fun and celebratory event where students and their families decorate their cars ahead of time, and one at a time drive onto the blacktop and drive The Circle of Pride while their teachers and Monroe staff cheer them on. Teachers will observe safety guidelines and social distancing.

This event is the right time to express school spirit and creativity! We ask that students and their families decorate their car in any creative style (i.e., signs, flowers, balloons, and play their child's favorite songs). We also ask that parents write the name of their child on a piece of paper, in large bolded letters, and place it on the inside of their dashboard. As the car drives-up, we will read the student's name and announce it on the sound system. Enjoy the ride around The Circle of Pride, honk, and cheer!

Families who will "walk the Circle" can dress up in any celebratory theme and are asked to line-up at least 6 feet apart alongside Colorado Blvd. We recognize that many 5th graders are disappointed at missing the final months of their elementary life---- and miss socializing with their friends on campus. However, we would like to keep everyone safe, and we ask that students and their families remain in their cars and appropriately distanced during this event.

Below are the scheduled time slots for each class for the Circle of Pride - June 3:
-Ms. Rivas - 9 am -9:45 am
-Ms. Mallette - 9:45 am -10:30 am
-Ms. Inda - 10:30 am - 11:00 am
-Ms. Iler - 11 am - 11:30 am

We will have nearly 70 5th graders, as a means of having an orderly event, cars should line-up around the perimeter of the school starting on Alta Vista heading south. Then the car line will turn right on to Olive heading west, then turn right on Mayflower heading north. Finally, cars will turn right heading east on Colorado Blvd. To enter the campus, heading east on Colorado Blvd. cars will enter the campus on Colorado Blvd., through the gate by the basketball courts and swings. As cars head off campus, cars will exit via the same gate, and continue heading east on Colorado Blvd.

Our hope is to bring closure and honor to our student's elementary school years, and lovingly launch them into middle school and adolescence in a fun and creative way!
