The Cultural Significance of Dia de Muertos

Dia de Muertos, otherwise known as the Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates and commemorates friends, family and loved ones who have departed. This annual holiday includes a special altar, the cleaning and decorating of graves, eating traditional foods such as pan de muerto and coming together to remember and celebrate those who have passed.

Monroe will build a school altar:
We will begin to build our school altar on October 29th. Students can bring a labeled copy of a loved one or some kind of artifact that is symbolic of their loved one. Consider making a copy of a precious photograph, and label the photo with the student's name and teacher’s name. Students can also draw a portrait.

We will take donations of Marigold flowers, candy skulls, Dia de Los Muertos ornamental Piñatas etc. We want to make this a wonderful commemorative cultural experience at school. Please participate!

Deadline to bring items for the altar is November 2nd.

Come and watch The Lego Batman Movie with Monroe Lions and families. It is FREE! You may wear your pajamas and bring your pillow and sleeping bag to the fun movie night. Pizza, soda, and yummy movie treats are available for purchase at the Snack Bar.

Monroe Lions can turn in candy in front of the cafeteria and by the handball courts.

Monday (Oct. 22) - STOP drugs! (Wear all red)

Tuesday (Oct. 23) - Sock it to drugs! (Wear crazy socks)

Wednesday (Oct. 24) - Put a cap on and team up against drugs! (Wear a hat and/or team jersey/shirt)

Thursday (Oct. 25)- I won't get mixed up in drugs! (Wear mismatched clothes)

Friday (Oct. 26) - Hairs to being drug free! (Crazy hair day)
